Return |
Cap Gemini |
NetWare and Windows Server
Support |
4 months + extensions to 1
year |
Working for Cap Gemini’s customer Corus ‘British Steel’ across the UK
and Ireland remotely from Aston and onsite at the customer’s sites around the
Midlands. We worked as a small team looking after around two hundred diverse
servers from NetWare 4.1 and NT 3.51 to NetWare 5.1 and Windows 2003 while users
and servers were being transitioned to a new infrastructure "DISOE".
Currently there are many NetWare separate trees and NT domains for different
parts of the business, which can make support a challenging mix of technical
issue, change control, and internal politics while dealing with the customer,
SDM’s and Cap Gemini management alongside solving technical problems.
As well as keeping the existing servers running and updated and a steady
stream of customer requested changes there were a number of projects to work on.
These included an onsite rescue of a failed migration from NT4 to Windows 2003,
rebuilding NT4 and then designing on-the-spot the correct move to Windows 2003
including login scripts, AD design, Group Policies, moving data and scripting
permissions. Carried out a number of onsite customer DR exercises to restore
NetWare, Windows 200x and SQL servers from tape and disc backups.
Streamlined automation of backups, backup status log checking, automation of
anti-virus DAT file roll-out and other scripted functions such as monthly
reports etc.
Applications included many in house applications together with all the
standard applications such as ZENworks (inc. new AO’s), NOV*OS 2000, NDL
Conductor, Remedy for calls and change control, Compaq Insight Manager, Arcserve
and Backup Exec of all versions, McAfee 4.5 to 8.00i and numerous remote control
tools.
During my time at [Company Name Confidential] I have been involved in all aspects of the
IT requirements which makes it hard to write a few paragraphs describing
everything. Following on from the work I did previously on designing a new
Windows 2000 infrastructure the entire site now uses W2K Professional and W2K
Server / Advanced Server, nearly 100 applications are rolled-out automatically
as MSI files to users and computers using Active Directory based groups
controlling Group Policy
I have had to deal with some unfortunate hardware failures impacting Active
Directory including the failure of Active Directory Domain Controllers requiring
manual removal from Active Directory using low level tools. Also the rebuild of
W2K cluster nodes following failure (on separate instances) of the OS boot and
shared Quorum drives stored on Fibre Channel RAID Array.
I have designed and rolled-out native R5 Lotus Notes / Domino clustering of
all user mail and key applications, designed and rolled-out server based Notes
mail archiving, and carried out a number of Notes development projects on key
applications used by all staff.
I have designed the current backup systems using Arcserve and SDLT tape
libraries, a ‘minor disaster’ recovery plan with home drive data needed for
login and user email servers synchronised with another site, and have always
implemented redundant or fail-over systems wherever possible. Implemented Sophos
Enterprise Manager to keep all servers and clients updated with virus checkers.
Systems used here included: Windows 2000 Server & Advanced Server,
Windows 2000 Professional, Lotus Notes & Domino R5.0.12, Arcserve, Active
Directory, Group Policy, SMS 2.0, SQL Server 2000, 3com Office Connect routers,
Sophos Enterprise Manager, Cisco routers, VLAN’s, Cisco WiFi
Access Points, AS/400 connectivity, ALT M1500 SDLT tape library.
I worked at Softlab helping to provide services to their
customers Land Rover, MG Rover etc. but mainly at Land Rover. Here I dealt
with supporting the NT, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 server infrastructure
as required. The servers ran critical applications controlling the production
lines and I was involved with a number of projects. These included bringing
all the servers, robots, and manufacturing equipment up to current patch
levels, anti-virus and reconfiguring security such that each server could pass
the stringent Ford 'SCT' security checks without breaking any of the
applications. I also dealt with support issues as they arose from faults with
clusters to another customers' SBS 4.5 server fault.
[Company Name Confidential] is another subsidiary of the global office
automation company. Following on from work carried out for the other subsidiary I planned, designed, and rolled-out Windows 2000 servers &
clients to replace all existing equipment. Because of close links with the other
[Company Name Confidential] subsidiaries a user could login onto any PC at either office and receive
their own data, email, and applications through the use of DFS based Group
Policy installed applications. A Lotus Notes server was also commissioned and
user’s mail moved onsite rather than being accessed over the WAN links.
Backups were using Arcserve onto DLT tape and Sophos is rolled out on a
continuous basis using Enterprise Manager.
Systems used here included : Windows 2000 Server,
Windows 2000 Professional, Lotus Notes & Domino R5.0.12, Arcserve 9, Active
Directory, Group Policy, SMS 2.0, SQL Server 2000, 3com Office Connect routers,
Sophos Enterprise Manager.
CeDo is a large global company that produces items such as food and bin bags
for all the major names. They needed assistance during the migration from Lotus
Notes and other diverse mail systems to one based on a single Windows 2000
domain across sites and Exchange 2000. I initially looked at problems with the
NT 3.51 based Lotus Notes 4.1 server being hijacked by email spammers and
implemented a second server running Notes 4.67 to deal with SMTP traffic and
block relaying traffic until Lotus Notes was phased out.
I then implemented new Windows 2000 servers on Compaq hardware in the UK
office, installed a new backup solution using ArcserveIT 2000 onto LTO tape and
generally assisted the IT Manager with the migration of users from Lotus Notes
to Microsoft Exchange, re-writing Lotus Notes applications outside of Notes.
Rolled out automated upgrade to CA eTrust InoculateIT across all desktop and
laptop clients.
Systems used here included: Windows 2000 Server, Professional, Windows
98, Windows 95, Exchange 2000, CA eTrust InoculateIT / Inoculan, Arcserve 2000,
Arcserve IT, Lotus Notes 4.x, Windows NT 3.51 Server
Following on from the design and planning stages the shared file data was
successfully combined from the existing NetWare servers and switched over to
Windows 2000 having ensured that all desktops had client software installed
allowing the roll-out of Windows 2000 Professional to desktops to commence. I
produced Microsoft Installer (MSI) packages using Winstall for each application
required by users. Power Quest Deploy Center was used to produce two main
Windows 2000 Professional disk images (Intel and AMD Athlon based) suitable for
rolling out across all PC's from P200 upwards.
As the rollout progressed successfully I continued to create further
application packages and modifications through Group Policy so that the standard
build could be rolled out to laptops for remote use using Offline Folders,
Remote Lotus Notes access etc. and for Japanese members. Every machine can be
used by either English or Japanese members with the OS and applications in their
native language using multi-language (MUI) versions of Microsoft Software and
specific Japanese and/or English packages for other applications.
Systems used here included: Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server,
Professional (multi-language English / Japanese), Visio 2002, Active Directory,
Group Policy, Lotus Notes 5.09, Arcserve 2000, Winstall, Power Quest Deploy
Center / Drive Image, Office XP MUI (English/Japanese).
Planning of an Active Directory and Windows 2000 infrastructure to replace
the current mixed Novell NetWare 4.1, Windows NT Server, and Windows 9x
workstation environment with a "one OS" Windows 2000 solution on
workstation and server. Data transfer, user creation etc. was scripted where
possible. The main servers were installed as Windows 2000-Advanced Server
running on clustered Compaq DL380 servers using fibre-channel connected RAID
array devices. A backup solution using Arcserve with a SDLT tape library was
installed. Lotus Domino servers were amalgamated using partitioned servers.
Group Policy was used to control every aspect of the Windows 2000 Professional
desktop, run login scripts, and install applications using Microsoft Installer
packages.
Also looked at network infrastructure and implemented Cisco 1601 routers to
connect two sites replacing 3com Office Connect 530s routers an upgraded fibre
links between buildings to use gigabit ethernet.
With some staff losses from the I.T. support & development teams there
was only one PC developer left. I took on the existing maintenance and developed
new Notes systems including their Purchase Requisition System, IT Helpdesk, IT
Knowledgebase, Health & Safety questionnaires, Pool Car, and Company Car
databases.
Systems used here included: Lotus Notes 5.0, Domino 5.0, VBA (Access 97),
LotusScript, Notes formula language
[Company Name Confidential] is a division
of a global office automation company and before I could work on a Windows
2000 project I assisted with the migration of Lotus Notes from v4 to v5 and
clearing the backlog of work that had accumulated due to staff leaving. I
then started a design project to migrate their hybrid NetWare and NT based
systems with Windows 9x workstations towards a more manageable Windows 2000
with Terminal Server being used for remote & basic client access. Due to
internal difficulties this stayed in a test environment but I left them with
plans of how to complete the migration.
The network infrastructure was somewhat tortured with
hubs and switches daisy-chained so I designed and implemented changes using
existing and new equipment which left gigabit connected switches in each
building and multiple full duplex 100Mbit fibre links forming trunks between
buildings. I also developed their Notes helpdesk application to give them
automatic monthly reporting facilities and made it easier to use for the
Helpdesk staff and generally supported the Notes infrastructure. In addition
to supporting the network & servers I also assisted the existing staff
in general support issues.
Systems used here included: Windows 2000
Professional; Server; Advanced Server; Terminal Server, Windows 95; 98; NT
Server 3.51; 4.0; Workstation 4.0, Apple Mac, NetWare 4.10, AS/400
connectivity, Lotus Notes / Domino 5.03, Arcserve 6 for NT & NetWare,
Windows 95 & NT Policies, Sybase clients, Novell Lanalyzer.
Short-term contract based at the secure former Lucas
Aerospace site in Wolverhampton. I supported the network infrastructure
consisting of NT servers, Windows 9x & NT workstations, and Microsoft
Mail. Amongst projects undertaken I migrated the old Token Ring network to
Ethernet, re-organised printing across the site onto new NT servers,
simplified and documented various installation processes. Implemented internal
automatic updates for Norton Antivirus.
Systems used here included: NT Server &
Workstation 4.0, Windows 95 & 98, Shiva D56 dial-in router, Outlook 98,
Microsoft Mail, Lotus Notes, Cognos, AS/400 Connectivity, Windows 95 Policies
& Profiles, Norton Antivirus, Live Update.
At Marconi Services, a secure division within Marconi, I migrated Notes users
and databases on the secure domain to and from the parent company with 23000
existing users on 100 servers. I dealt with day to day administration of the
secure Lotus Notes infrastructure supporting 1000 users on 10 sites with 8
Domino servers utilising clustering.
Systems used here included: Lotus Notes / Domino v4.6.3, NT
4.0, NetWare 4.11, NDS.
Support position taking escalated faults supporting around
3000 users at the Coventry site on a broad range of applications with NT4 and
NetWare 5.0 servers, NDS, ZEN Works, and Unix users with WTS sessions for access
to PC only applications.
Systems used here included: NT 4.0,
NetWare 4.11 & 5.0, Lotus Notes v4.6.3, WTS,
Designed a new NetWare 5 based infrastructure to replace NetWare
3 & 4 based servers that were unstable due to neglect and had a critical
lack of system & user disc space. I put in a quick fix by archiving some 200
old users, data, and applications before planning a longer-term solution. The
hardware I found to be non-Y2K compliant and incapable of taking the volume of
data and providing the high availability now required so with Y2K approaching I
recommended moving the existing Head Office infrastructure of 15 NetWare servers
into new NetWare 5 based replacements.
Because of the re-structuring of the group I proposed and
implemented a radical reorganisation of NDS, which I presented to senior
management, involving moving every user into a new structure as their data was
migrated. I installed redundant Compaq Proliant 3000's rack mount servers using
SmartArray controllers to serve 140Gb of disc space to the users with backup
using ArcserveIT 6.6 onto DLT tapes. Rolled out NDL NOV*IX 2000 using NDS access
control to replace NetWare 3.12 and redesigned printing for the entire site onto
a controllable NetWare Remote Printer configuration.
Systems used here included: NetWare 5.0,
4.11, NDS, Compaq Smartstart, NOV*IX 2000. ArcserveIT 6.6.
At Marconi SN I provided 2nd -3rd line support and helped
clear a backlog of fault calls from their helpdesk. Having gained full security
clearance I initially cleared over a hundred helpdesk calls to take the number
of faults on site down to a handful allowing us to concentrate on more pressing
Y2K issues. I updated the Windows 95 based laptops to Year 2000 compliance and
converted the MS Mail Remote users to Lotus Notes over Secure-ID based dialup
then trained small groups on how to use the new facilities.
Systems used here included: NetWare 4.11, Lotus Notes
v4.6.3, MS Mail, Windows 95, ZEN Works, Secure-ID, Y2K
IT division of the AAH Pharmaceuticals wholesale group
which also owns retail chains in the UK including Hills and Lloyds Chemist. My
position was in the 3rd line Server team where I was called upon to
support escalated user and server problems in the 24:7 Production environment.
I dealt with users of all levels and carried out support in person and over
the telephone both to users in the Coventry office and the Warehouse chain
throughout the country. Tasks I carried out included designing &
configuring the computer systems for a new multi-£1m / day warehouse,
migrating NetWare servers & users to NT, setting up an Intranet
documentation site and supporting the teams of 2nd and 1st
line support people.
Systems used here included: NT 4 Server &
Workstation, NetWare 3.12, 3.2, 4.11, Windows 95, 98, 3.1x, DOS, Office 97,
Lotus Notes 4.5, Lotus Smartsuite, QVTNet emulator, Arcserve for NT &
NetWare, McAfee Virus Scan, Microsoft Proxy Server, Internet Information
Server & Index Server, Novell Diskless workstations, Firefox NOV*IX
Gateway, DHCP, WINS.
I returned to FTP for a month to help them through
restructuring and to extend the hand-over to the replacement IT person that I
hired. I spent some time rebuilding the network and telephone systems and
investigated ways to save the company money including a Leased Cost Routing
service for the PBX and a restructured data WAN to save the company some
£30k.

Firefox was a small but fast growing software company that
was then bought by FTP Software Inc. before the ‘.com boom’ who downsized
until only 30 remained in Birmingham. I was the sole IT person for the UK and
developing European offices, then Supervisor of a small team and reporting
direct to Munich. I had to work on my own initiative, to tight deadlines, yet
also dropping everything when priorities changed. I established a helpdesk
call centre using a Lotus Notes database to track calls and produce reports
backing up my requests to senior-management.
As technology and budgets improved, I upgraded Firefox from
DOS PC's running Word Perfect 5.1 and Lotus 123 on NetWare 3.11 servers over
thin ethernet in various stages. This gave users Windows 95 or NT desktops,
with NetWare 4.1 and NT 4 servers running over 100baseT switched ethernet, and
fast internet and email access. After FTP I was responsible for the Sun Unix
boxes, updating Sendmail, Bind DNS etc. I also maintained and helped implement
the Lucent PABX.
I implemented and supported a multi-server Lotus Notes 4.x
/ 3.x domain including various Notes workflow systems which I wrote, and
Remote LAN access over Analog PSTN & ISDN for all offices using Shiva and
Netblazer routers. Implemented DHCP and WINS across Europe using NT4 Server,
Sophos Sweep installed as a centrally updated client virus-checker. Installed
Legato as the backup standard for NT and Seagate Storage Manager for NetWare.
