Starting and stopping individual SMTP/MIME MTA tasks

The following is a list of TELL commands supported by the Notes R4 SMTPMTA from Notes KB article 178888

To troubleshoot problems with the SMTP/MIME MTA , you can stop and start individual tasks or groups of tasks--for example, all the outbound tasks or just the outbound transport tasks.

Stopping and starting individual tasks is not an everyday function. Even if an MTA only performs inbound work, it still requires the outbound tasks to return Non-Delivery reports.

The table below lists the MTA commands and the tasks they stop or start. Note that the following are all Tell commands so the SMTP MTA must be running the add-in controller to perform these operations.

SMTP MTA Tell Command Tasks Affected
Tell SMTPMTA Start Starts all subtasks, OMSGCNV, OSESCTL, IMSGCNV,
ISESCTL and DRTask
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Stops all subtasks, but leaves the add-in controller running
Tell SMTPMTA Start Outbound Starts all Outbound tasks, OMSGCNV, OSESCTL
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Outbound Stops all Outbound tasks
Tell SMTPMTA Start Outbound Conversion Starts OMSGCNV task
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Outbound Conversion Stops OMSGCNV task
Tell SMTPMTA Start Outbound Transport Starts OSESCTL task
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Outbound Transport Stops OSESCTL task
Tell SMTPMTA Start Inbound Starts all Inbound tasks, IMSGCNV, ISESCTL
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Inbound Stops all Inbound tasks
Tell SMTPMTA Start Inbound Conversion Starts IMSGCNV
Tell SMTPMTA Stop INBOUND Conversion Stops IMSGCNV
Tell SMTPMTA Start Inbound Transport Starts ISESCTL
Tell SMTPMTA Stop Inbound Transport Stops ISESCTL
Tell SMTPMTA Start DRTASK Starts DRT
Tell SMTPMTA Stop DRTASK Stops DRT

Note You cannot directly control the ISESHLRn and OSESHLRn tasks. If present, they will shut down when you stop their associated controller tasks. They will only start when launched by the controller tasks.
